Magazine Monday for December 19, 2011

My latest Magazine Monday column is up at the Fantasy Literature website. This week I write about The Empress of Mars, a new glossy magazine. I think what happened here is that a bunch of folks who had a writing group decided to start their own magazine without the help of any real professionals in the field. It's a sincere effort, but it needs work.

Last week I wrote about Unstuck, a new literary magazine. I wasn't best pleased with that publication, either, but for entirely different reasons: the stories all sounded the same. With the same tone, and the same sort of high-minded literary approach, the magazine got boring long before I finished all 300+ pages.

Here's hoping that whatever I write about next is superlative!

Great Titles

For both magazines. I don't think it was your intention but you got me curious about Unstuck. That said I had a hard time with literary fiction short stories today and I'm not sure if elements of the fantastic will make me feel better.

If you want to read something with a hint of the fantastic...

I recommend Granta 117, which has a "Horror" theme. The theme is loosely interpreted, but the stories and essays are fabulous.
