Gone Fishin'

I'm leaving tomorrow for a week's vacation in our nation's capitol, Washington, D.C. I expect to spend most of my time in various museums; look for me to tear up when I see the actual Constitution and Declaration of Independence at the National Archives.

We will, of course, also hit every bookstore we can find. If you have any recommendations of favorites in D.C., please let me know in the comments! We've already got Politics and Prose and Kramerbooks and Afterwords Cafe on the list.

In the meantime, I leave you with a recommendation that you find yourself a copy of Tokyo Cancelled by Rana Dasgupta and read it, as soon as possible. I learned of this book by reading Niall's review on his excellent blog, Torque Control. I can't add anything to that review, and so won't even try: just get the book and read it, because it's terrific.

Have a great week!

Favorites

I think my very favorite story was the one about the magic Oreos. There's just something about the conjunction of those two words: "magic Oreos." It's going to stick with me for a long time. But more than the phrase: the phrase will bring the story to mind, and I love the whole concept behind the story.

Like you, I enjoyed "The Memory Editor," and saw in it echoes of the biblical story of Joseph and his brothers, at least in the main idea of a youngest son who tells his father and brothers that one day he will be greater than they. I love the way these stories twisted and turned in on themselves, as happened in "The Billionaire's Sleep"; you think you're reading one story, and it transmutes into another, about different characters.

Thanks for this recommendation, Niall. This one's going on my list of best reads of 2009.
